NAHB surveyed nearly 4,000 homebuyers – people who recently purchased a home or plan to purchase one within the next three years – ranking 175 features based on how essential they are to a home purchasing decision.

  1. Kitchen and dining room to be completely or partially open (86 percent)
  2. Stainless steel appliances (67 percent)
  3. Granite or natural stone kitchen countertops (57 percent)
  4. White kitchen cabinetry (32 percent)
  5. Walk-in pantry
  6. Hardwood flooring
  7. Garage storage
  8. Garage for 3 cars
  9. Patio
  10. Exterior lighting


Other rising trends

  1. Farmhouse styles incorporating ample amounts of wood
  2. Engineered quartz countertops for color flexibility
  3. Vinyl and resilient flooring, especially for aging in place
  4. Wireless controls
  5. Open interior and exterior spaces in the kitchen
  6. Higher-end fixture installations in the bathroom, such as wall-mounted sinks, faucets, and toilets
